Quantity Surcharge and Consumer Heterogeneity
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies quantity surcharge and heterogeneity in consumer attention, using scanner data in the peanut butter category. Quantity surcharge exists for packaged goods when a smaller package size is cheaper than its larger size counterpart per unit. Quantity surcharges are frequent in the data, and households have heterogeneous purchasing behavior during quantity surcharge weeks: attentive households purchase multiple smaller jars, but inattentive households choose an inferior option of buying larger jars. However, no existing demand model can accommodate the inattentive type’s purchasing behavior. Hence, I develop a dynamic demand model that features heterogeneity in consumer attention and multiple-jar purchases. I assume four household types: attentive non-storer, inattentive non-storer, attentive storer, and inattentive storer. The demand model departs from the standard single discrete choice model in two ways: 1) it separates purchase quantity and package size choice and 2) it considers consumption quantity as a countable variable. I identify household types using the method of kmeans and estimate the parameters using maximum likelihood. The estimation results show that storer type households are more price sensitive than non-storer type households, and between the two types of storer households, attentive storers are more price sensitive than inattentive storers. *I am grateful to Jason Blevins, Maryam Saeedi, Bruce Weinberg, and especially Javier Donna for their guidance and support. Empirical Analysis of Price Setting and Quantity Surcharges in the German Food Sector
This study examined the incidence and determinants of quantity price discounts and quantity price surcharges in the German food sector through a bivariate probit, using recent consumer scanner survey data. Selectivity bias was corrected for in estimating the degree of quantity price surcharge and quantity price discount, using Heckman’s procedure. The findings reveal that almost 10% of the inve...
متن کاملExamining Effectiveness of Partitioned-pricing Strategies and Its Transparency in Online Auction Marketplaces
The current study offers insights into how a pricing strategy called partitioned pricing and its transparency can influence auction success variables. In the online auction environment, auction sellers have to make several surcharge decisions such as whether or not to omit surcharge information from their auction listings or how much the surcharge should be, etc. We found that auctions that did...
متن کاملSurcharge Development and the Impact of a Decentralized Capacity Mechanism
The German support for renewable energies in the electricity sector is based on the feed-in tariff for investors that grants guaranteed revenues for their renewable energy supply. Corresponding to differences of granted tariffs and respective market values, a surcharge on consumption covers differential costs. While granted tariffs are bound to fall with advances in renewable energy technologie...
متن کاملExamining Demand Elasticities in Hanemann's Framework: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis
T paper examines demand elasticities using an integrated framework proposed by Hanemann [Hanemann, M. W. 1984. Discrete/continuous models of consumer demand. Although the Hanemann framework has been the mainstay of e...
متن کاملA Study of the Rockfill Material Behavior in Large-Scale Tests
Inspecting the behavior of the rockfill materials is of significant importance in analysis of rockfill dams. Since the dimensions of grains in such materials are greater than the conventional sizes suitable for soil mechanics tests, it is necessary to experimentally study them in specific large-scale apparatuses. In this research, the behavior of rockfill materials in two large rockfill dams co...
